Memory

A memory is the atomic unit of OmegaVault — one structured, versioned piece of context. Everything else in the platform is built around it.

What's in a memory

Every memory carries the same core fields, regardless of where it came from:

  • Content — the actual text or payload of the memory.
  • Source — where it came from (manual capture, Claude, ChatGPT, etc.).
  • Tags — free-form labels you can filter and group by.
  • Collections — optional buckets a memory can belong to (many-to-many).
  • Timestamps — created, last edited, last recalled.
  • History — every edit is preserved; you can roll back.

How memories are created

Three paths to a memory — see Capture for details on each:

  • Automatic — captured by a connected AI client.
  • Manual — typed or pasted in the OmegaVault app.
  • Programmatic — created via the API or MCP.

Versioning

Memories are versioned. Edits create a new version; the previous one is preserved. You can view the full history and restore any prior version. This matters because AI-captured context can change — fix a wrong summary, restore an earlier wording.

Recall

Memories become useful when a connected client retrieves them. Recall is semantic by default — OmegaVault matches the intent of a query, not just keywords. See Search for the full mechanism.
